It's that time of year where everyone gives their own opinions of what were the best and worst parts of the year......so I thought I'd give it a go! The following are (in my opinion) the 10 best and worst films made in 2010! Enjoy!
Best:
10. Paranormal Activity 2 - Set during the events of the first, the story revolves around the haunting of the sister of the girl from the first. So why did this make my list? Personally, I actually enjoyed this movie. Very few movies have me on the edge of my seat and making me jump every 5 minutes. This did. Winner in my books!
9. Cemetry Junction - Ricky Gervais and Steve Merchant are back, now working together for the first time on a movie. Based on true stories from the lads' childhoods, this comedy-drama tells the tale of 3 English friends growing up in middle-class lives and how their different personalities got them into all sorts of trouble. Overall a brilliant movie, despite some poor, lacking scenes. All of this forgotten about with the cameo of Karl Pilkington himself.
8. Kick Ass - Does exactly as in it's name. Quite possibily the best comic-book movie ever (minus one of course!) It's the simple story of boy orders suit, boy wears suit, boy gets stabbed and loses all feelings of pain, boy becomes super-hero. With the help of a psycho father/daughter duo, they take on the biggest baddest villain in town. Sequel already in the works - Should be good! :P
7. Due Date - Director Todd Phillips returns with yet another hilarious comedy, this time about a man (Downey Jr) who needs to get home in time for his son's birth, only to be banned from air travel with no money. Solution - travel with mind-numbingly annoying wanna-be actor Zach Galifianakis. Although not as good as The Hangover, it still managed to make me hurt with laughter and drop my jaw in shock and disbelief.
6. Splice - I shouldn't like it but I do. Two scientists working on making a new organism to help cure diseases such as cancer, mix in human DNA and create a creature which as it ages (quickly) becomes more and more human. As if this storyline wasn't weird enough as is, plenty of scenes are thrown in to add to the awkwardness. You definitely shouldn't like it......but you do!
5. Toy Story 3 - Woody, Buzz and the gang return for a whole new adventure in this genius Pixar movie, that will have you buying your own Woody doll......Yeah, I did! A must watch for the entire family! This isn't necessarily the end of the Toy Story saga, as we will be seeing more in some up-coming Pixar Shorts (The first being at the start of Cars 2).
4. Jackass 3D - Best use of 3D technology to date. A hilarious, squirmish hour and a half of Knoxville and his team doing what they do best - acting the fool!! Brilliant!
3. Inception - Full review below! What needs to be said? Most original, thought-provoking movie I've watched in a long time.
2. Despicable Me - This movie came as a giant surprise for me. I went to see it as a last resort and it was amazing. Funny (for both adult and child - me), smart and stunning animation. Overall, this movie was a winner. An evil not-so-genius tries to take first place as most evil villain from his nemesis and adopts three girls to do so, with hilarious results.
And the winner is...........
1. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World (shocker!) - Best. Movie. Ever. Director Edgar Wright (Shaun of The Dead, Hot Fuzz), returns to give us this nerd-fest comic-book transformation about a young man, Scott (Cera) who must battle his new girlfriends seven evil exes in order to earn her heart. 9.99/10 for this one. My only drawback was choice of song for the final duel. I'm being too picky I know, but The Prodigy's Invaders Must Die, should have been the chosen song for such a battle. However, other then this, the whole movie lived up to my high expectations and was perfection.
Honorable mentions -
Youth In Revolt (Cera plays yet another awkward teen - only this time he's bipolar and a bit of a badass). Well worth a watch.
The Social Network - The story of how Facebook was created. Fascinating story, and superb acting, as well as an amazing soundtrack. However, the whole thing wasn't 2 hours worth of film time and felt dragged towards the end.
The following are the ten worst films of 2010.....in no particular order, I wasted time and money watching these. You have been warned:
Monsters - I don't know who is giving this 5 stars.....Spoiler alert - not happens in the whole thing!!! The last 5 minutes are the most eventful and even they're rubbish. For me, this was the biggest disappointment of the year and would advise everyone to steer clear.
Skyline - Another let-down. Only this time it's a B-Movie with a budget. Absolutely terrible. Aliens invade LA and a group of people fight for survival. It tried too hard and had too much happening in some scenes.
Grown Ups - Looks like I'm not the only one who found this annoying. Every worst of 2010 list seems to include this. I hate Adam Sandler as is, but due to the cast I figured I'd give it a go......how wrong was I?! The whole film feels like a list of jokes strung loosely around a crappy storyline. Once again Sandler has produced tripe and I officially wash my hands of his movies!
Sex and The City 2 - Loved the tv show and the first movie? Well shame on you, it's because of you this was made and people like me had to sit through this, counting down the seconds until we could escape the theatre....number 3 doesn't seem likely (thank God!)
Death At A Funeral - American remake of the British comedy which was hilarious to begin with. Why is this on the list? Because the American version has slaughtered the original. The story is the same, as are most of the base characters, and the jokes are just dumbed down. It was so bad I turned it off......and I never turn a movie off!
I Love You Phillip Morris - I did not like this one at all. It did have some funny parts but this was outweighed by the rest of the film. Very disappointed with Carey for this one......I thought he was better then this.
Valentines Day - Yeah.......chic flic......nuff said
Killers - Ashton Kutcher and Kathrine Heigal star in this hilarious, action-packed film, they are Mr and Mrs Smith....Oh no wait.....this is shite! Woeful movie with an all too predictable ending.
Hot Tub Time Machine - "Super Bad meets Back To The Future"....What could go wrong?? Answer - everything!! Such potential wasted. The story is about a group of guys who travel back to the 80s accidentally thanks to a hot tub.....they could have went anywhere with this but unfortunately messed up big time.
Shrek Forever After - (For now). The Shrek films have grown old. The original was an amazing, groundbreaking family comedy that has spawned 3 sequels. However, it sunk all new lows with this one. It seems that as long as there is money to be made in the franchise, they'll pop out any old movie, this one being no exception. They say this one's the last......we'll see how long that promise lasts!
As said by Einstein himself - For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction, and it seems this is the case even for movies. For every good and entertaining movie, there seems to be about 4 shite ones! It seems this year I've wasted just as much time and money watching and enjoying my movies, as I did sitting through the drivel! This is of course all my own opinion, and you're free to torture yourselves with these "movies"!!! Enjoy!!
Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and that you all have a brilliant New Year!!!
